I'm afraid macros don't work like that at all. They're not meant to reduce the number of actions you the player has to perform (i.e. buttons to press). They're for increasing efficiency in ability use and button presses by collapsing several into one button and the macro will run the first ability that can be legally performed in the list that you define. Given the sheer number of abilities you pick up, it saves on a lot of hotbars.
As an example say you have 3 reactives, one with no cooldown but has to be done after you block an incoming attack with a shield, one that has a long cooldown that you can do immediately after you perform a critical hit and one that you perform immediately after the enemy blocks one of your attacks but that kicks off the global cooldown timer. You'd set up a macro that has all 3 listed in the following order:
long cooldown post-crit no cooldown post-yourblock global cooldown post-theirblock
Then you just need to hit that one key and you will instantly perform whichever reactive has been triggered, with priority given to the ones you like best (i.e. big damage, doesn't shove everything into cooldown, lowest power consumption etc).
In your case, stick allt he similar basic abilities into a macro list with similar priorities and bam, have to put far fewer into hotbar buttons and a lot less whack-a-mole with the number keys.
I found macros to be of most use for my warrior, and of least use for my cleric, incidentally.
About the Iron, I'm not sure in terms of Defiant side where to find safe iron. Guardians have it easy on that front (beginning of Scarlet Gorge from Gloamwood), but the flipside to that is Freemarch is a Copper haven that's easy and safe to mine for newbs whereas Silverwood has only a bit ooop nawf which isn't easy or safe for lowbies at all...
